The Link Between Periodontal Disease and Heart Disease November 25 2014

Several theories exist to explain the link between periodontal disease and heart disease.  One theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream, attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries and contributing to clot formation.  Coronary artery disease is characterized by a thickening of the walls of the coronary arteries due to buildup of fatty proteins.   Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, restricting the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly.   This can lead to heart attacks.

Another possibility is that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque build up, which may contribute to the swelling of the arteries.

Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are almost TWICE as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease.   Periodontal disease can also exacerbate existing heart conditions.

Dr David Schwartz, at Aesthetic Dentistry of Great Neck, examines his patients for periodontal disease and treats them with the newest procedures.

Pediatric Guidelines Recommend Fluoride for Caries Prevention November 22 2014

Dental caries is the most common chronic disease that effects children.  In a new report by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) titled "Fluoride Use in Caries Prevention in the Primary Care Setting," published in the September 2014 issue of Pediatrics, the AAP issued the following new recommendation:

     -  Fluoridated toothpaste is recommended for all children starting at tooth eruption, regardless of caries risk.

     -  A smear (size of a grain of rice) of toothpaste should be used up to age 3.  After age 3, a pea sized amount may be used. Parents should dispense toothpaste and supervise and assist with brushing.

     -  Fluoride varnish is recommended in the primary care setting every 3 to 6 months starting at tooth emergence.

     -  Over-the-counter fluoride rinse is not recommended for children younger than 6 years due to risk of swallowing higher than recommended levels of fluoride.

Dr David Schwartz, at Aesthetic Dentistry of Great Neck, agrees that children should be given fluoride starting at tooth emergence.  At every cleaning appointment, a fluoride application is done on children's teeth to help prevent against caries.

Parents Urged to Establish Relationship With Dentist Early November 20 2014

The American Dental Association reports that the dentists should urge parents to begin practicing proper dental habits before their children's teeth even begin to surface, creating the foundation for a lifetime of good health.  Dentists also recommend taking children to the dentist by their first birthday so that the dentist can ensure the child's teeth are erupting properly and that their are no dental abnormalities.

At Aesthetic Dentistry of Great Neck, Dr David Schwartz urges parents to bring in their children as early as possible so they can establish a relationship with the dentist early.  Parents and children will then have a familiar place to turn in the event that there is a dental injury or an unusual dental pain.

Options for Chipped Teeth November 19 2014

If you have a chipped tooth, you’re not alone! In fact, chipped teeth are the most common dental injury today. But don’t let that little-known fact fool you into ignoring a chipped tooth; any type of dental trauma deserves immediate attention. A small chip may not cause you pain, but there could be damage underneath the surface of the tooth. Dr David Schwartz, at Aesthetic Dentistry of Great Neck, can rule out cracks or internal tooth problems that aren’t visible to the naked eye.

Options, Options

Chipped tooth treatments vary according to the amount of damage. Depending on your situation, any one of these chipped tooth treatments may be an option for you:

Dental Bonding – Most chips can be corrected with dental bonding. Dental bonding is an efficient, durable and cost-effective way to correct minor chips.

Enamel Shaping – Often used in conjunction with dental bonding, enamel shaping can also correct small chips or surface flaws. During enamel shaping, a small portion of the tooth’s surface is removed or recontoured to smooth out imperfections.

Dental Veneers – If the chip is significant and dental bonding or enamel shaping can’t be used, you may need a veneer. These thin, porcelain wafers completely cover the surface of the tooth and are often used for front teeth.

Root Canal – Pain in the location of the chip can be a sign that the nerve is exposed. If that’s the case, a root canal may be necessary to save the tooth.

Dental Crown – A dental crown is used to completely cover larger teeth or to cap a tooth after a root canal.

Tooth Extraction – If the tooth can’t be saved, a tooth extraction may be necessary. The good news is a dental bridge or dental implants can replace missing teeth.

Sealants Are Critical to Children' Oral Health November 18 2014

Sealants are plastic coatings that protect those difficult to reach pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of the teeth from the bacteria that cause tooth decay. A quick and painless procedure done in Dr David Schwartz's Great Neck office, sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of permanent molars as soon as possible after they fully erupt in the mouth, usually between the ages of six to eight for first molars and 10 to 12 for second molars.

The good news is you may be able to help prevent future cavities by making sure your child receives preventive care, including having sealants applied to first and  second molars.  Statistics show that approximately 60 to 70 percent of cavities can be prevented by placing sealants on children's molars .

As a parent, you want your child to be as healthy as possible, and that includes protecting their teeth.  Dr David Schwartz and his staff want your child's teeth to be protected too. Sealants can save your child from future pain and discomfort that often accompany cavities.
